Pretty cool method for creating fish net! I tried doing this in blender:
It works fine, but the triangle count is quite high! (16k)
A way to reduce triangle count is to remove the wireframe modifier, and then use inset individual (I) and then remove faces:

You end up with half as many triangles that way! (8k)
An even better approach would probably be to keep the unwireframed mesh, and instead hide parts of faces through UVs and maps.
Here there's only 2k triangles.

It's definitely doable to use UVs. I just made this shitty texture and used it for transparency.
So just 2k tris in this case!

In blender you can just delete the UV and then create a new one:
